The 515 area code covers Des Moines and north-central Iowa, and it sits in the Central Time Zone. Most people who look it up just got a call or text from a 515 number and want to know where it’s from and whether it’s safe.

This guide answers that in plain language: where 515 is, what time it is there, how to dial it, and how to tell a real call from a scam. One quick note before we start: this is general information, not legal or financial advice. And remember, any number can be faked, so a 515 caller ID alone never proves who’s really calling.

Where Is the 515 Area Code Located?

The 515 area code is in the U.S. state of Iowa, covering the north-central part of the state and centered on the Des Moines metro. It’s a single geographic area code with no overlay, so every number in the region shares it.

Area code 515 serves most of the north-central part of Iowa, and the numbering plan area includes Des Moines, Ames, Ankeny, Humboldt, Boone, Fort Dodge, Jefferson, Johnston, Urbandale, Algona and Indianola. West Des Moines is in the mix too.

It reaches across roughly 20 to 21 counties, including Polk, Story, Dallas, and Warren. In all, it serves a population of 1,019,983 people, in a single Central time zone.

Let’s clear up a common mix-up. The 515 area code is not in California and not in Canada. It’s a U.S. Iowa code, full stop. If a search engine or a caller told you otherwise, that was wrong.

What Time Zone Is the 515 Area Code In?

The 515 area code is in the Central Time Zone. It uses Central Standard Time (UTC-6) in winter and switches to Central Daylight Time (UTC-5) during daylight saving. So the 515 area code time zone is Central, year-round.

Daylight Saving Time in this region is observed from March to November. During those months, clocks in Des Moines run one hour ahead of standard time.

Here’s a practical tip. Before you call a 515 number from another zone, convert the time first so you don’t ring someone at 6 a.m. their time. The table below shows what time it is in 515 when it’s noon where you are.

Your Time ZoneOffset From 515 (Central)When It’s 12:00 PM Your Time, in 515

Mountain1 hour behind 5151:00 PM
Pacific2 hours behind 5152:00 PM
UTC/GMT5-6 hours ahead of 5156:00-7:00 AM

Say you’re in Los Angeles at noon. It’s already 2:00 p.m. in Des Moines, so a lunchtime call works fine on both ends.

A Quick History of the 515 Area Code

The 515 area code is one of the original 1947 area codes created under the North American Numbering Plan, and it was Iowa’s first. It was put into service in 1947 as one of the original 86 area codes, originally served central Iowa including Des Moines, and was the first area code in the state of Iowa.

At first, it stretched much wider. Area code 515 originally served the central part of the state, stretching border to border from Minnesota to Missouri.

Then the phones multiplied. In 2000, the eastern and southern portions of the area were split off with area code 641, leaving 515 with only about one-fourth of its original area, including Des Moines and the area northwest of the city.

A more recent change explains today’s dialing rules. Prior to October 2021, area code 515 had telephone numbers assigned for the central office code 988, and after 988 was designated nationwide for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, the area code was scheduled to transition to ten-digit dialing by October 24, 2021.

One fun local detail the sales pages skip: the heavy metal band Slipknot, being from Des Moines, named the song “(515)” on the album Iowa after the area code.

How to Dial a 515 Number

Because of that 988 change, you must dial all 10 digits for every 515 call, even a local one across town. Seven-digit dialing no longer works in the region.

Here are the three formats you’ll use:

  1. Local or within the U.S. – dial 1-515-XXX-XXXX (many local calls connect with just 515-XXX-XXXX).
  2. Long distance from elsewhere in the U.S. – dial 1-515-XXX-XXXX.
  3. International – dial your country’s exit code, then +1-515-XXX-XXXX.

For local calls you dial the area code followed by the number, for national calls you precede it with 1, and for international calls you dial your country’s exit code followed by +1 and the number.

The most common mistake is assuming you can still punch in only seven digits at home. In the 515 region, that call won’t go through, so save numbers with the full 10 digits.

Are 515 Calls Safe? Spotting Scams and Spam

The 515 area code is a legitimate Iowa code, but scammers can spoof it to make a call look local. So a 515 number by itself is not proof a call is genuine. The 515 area code is a legitimate area code serving Des Moines, Iowa, but scammers can spoof any area code using technology to make calls appear to come from a local number.

Caller ID spoofing is when a caller fakes the number that shows on your screen. Fraudsters use “neighbor spoofing” because people are far more likely to answer a number that looks local.

Picture this. You get a 515 call, and the person says they’re from your bank or the IRS, warning you owe money and need to pay or share your account details right now. That urgency is the red flag. Real banks and the IRS don’t work that way over a surprise call.

Here’s what to do if a 515 call feels off:

  1. Don’t share personal or payment information on the call.
  2. Don’t call the number back blindly.
  3. Let unknown calls go to voicemail and screen them.
  4. Verify the organization by calling its official number from its website or your card.
  5. Report fraud to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov.

If you receive a suspicious call from the 515 area code, do not provide personal information and report it to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov.

One more thing worth knowing: 515 is a geographic code, not toll-free. Toll-free area codes in the US include 800, 833, 844, 855, 866, 877, and 888.

Getting a 515 Number for Your Business

A 515 number can give your business a local presence in the Des Moines metro, one of Iowa’s strongest economic hubs. Customers tend to trust and answer a familiar local number more than an unplaceable one.

Virtual and VoIP providers can set you up with a new 515 number or port an existing one, so you don’t need to live in Iowa to use one. Treat that as a practical option, not a must.

Central Iowa gives that local number real weight. The Des Moines metropolitan area is a key driver of Iowa’s economy, home to major industries such as insurance and financial services, agriculture and agribusiness, manufacturing, healthcare, and information technology. Major companies such as Principal Financial Group, Ruan Transportation, TMC Transportation, and Wellmark Blue Cross are headquartered here.

For a small shop or a remote pro serving Iowa clients, that local code can be the small signal that gets a call picked up instead of ignored.

The Bottom Line

If a 515 number just called you, treat it as a real Iowa code from the Des Moines area, but verify before you trust, since the number can be spoofed. Your safest next move is simple: let unknown 515 calls go to voicemail, then call the organization back on its official number if the message seems real.

FAQ

Where is the 515 area code located?

The 515 area code is in north-central Iowa, centered on Des Moines. It’s a U.S. geographic code covering roughly 20 to 21 counties, including Polk, Story, Dallas, and Warren.

What time zone is the 515 area code in?

The 515 area code is in the Central Time Zone. It uses Central Standard Time (UTC-6) in winter and Central Daylight Time (UTC-5) during daylight saving, which runs about March through November.

Is 515 a California or Canada area code?

No. The 515 area code is a U.S. code in Iowa, not California and not Canada. If a result told you it was in California or Canada, that information was incorrect.

Why do I have to dial 10 digits for a 515 number?

Because 988 became the national Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, some 515 numbers that used 988 as a prefix created a conflict. That conflict for seven-digit dialing meant the area code transitioned to ten-digit dialing by October 24, 2021. So you now dial all 10 digits, even locally.
