Why she stepped away from acting
Smith never made a big announcement about retiring. She simply stopped taking roles. She wrote it under her married name, Afton Fraser, and it is a guide to the best classic films made between 1930 and 1960. It is, in its own way, a love letter to the cinema she grew up enjoying.
In 2011 she co-wrote Point to Happy: For Children on the Autism Spectrum with her mother, Miriam Smith, and her sister, Margo Smith Wick. The book helps children on the autism spectrum to show and share their feelings, and it was inspired by her eldest son, Griffin, who is on the spectrum. A third book, The Tiger: Class of January 1922, followed in 2018.
